How To Keep Your Color From Fading Cómo Hacer Que Tu Color Dure

Color on this coast fades faster than almost anywhere else. Sun, salt water and heavy humidity all work on it at once, every single day. The good news is that most fading comes down to a few daily habits, and those are easy to change. Here is what actually makes color last between appointments.

Why color fades faster here

Color fades when the hair cuticle opens and the pigment inside slowly washes out. On the Caribbean coast, almost everything in daily life opens that cuticle a little more. Strong sun breaks pigment down. Salt water dries the hair out. Hot water in the shower opens the cuticle wider every time you wash. Put all three together and a color that would hold for weeks somewhere cooler can look tired much sooner here.

Porosity makes a big difference too. Hair that has been colored, lightened or chemically treated is usually more porous, which means it takes in moisture fast and loses it just as fast. Color leaves porous hair the same way. That is why keeping the hair healthy and hydrated is the real foundation of keeping color.

Why it matters more than people think

Keeping your color is about more than how it looks this week. The rule behind all of our color work is that tint does not lift tint. A lighter tint can lighten natural hair, but it cannot lighten hair that already has color in it. So once color fades into a shade you do not love, it cannot simply be lifted back to where it was. The more of your color you keep, the easier and gentler every refresh becomes.

How you wash makes the biggest difference

  • Wash less often. Every wash takes a little color with it. Between full washes, co wash, which means cleansing with conditioner instead of shampoo. It is gentle and adds moisture at the same time.
  • Use a gentle, sulfate free shampoo for the washes that do need real shampoo. Strong shampoos strip moisture and color together.
  • Skip clarifying shampoo at home. It is a deep cleansing treatment that belongs in the salon, and used at home it pulls color out fast.
  • Rinse with lukewarm or cool water rather than hot. Cooler water keeps the cuticle closed and holds the color in.

Sun, salt and the beach

You do not have to give up the beach to keep your color. A little preparation goes a long way.

  • Wet your hair with fresh water and add a leave in conditioner before you swim. Hair that is already full of fresh water and conditioner absorbs much less salt or chlorine.
  • Rinse with fresh water as soon as you can after the sea or the pool, even if you are not washing.
  • Cover up in strong midday sun. A hat or a scarf is the simplest protection there is.
  • Protect before heat. A heat protecting spray or oil goes on before any blow drying or styling tools, and it helps against the sun during the day as well.

Vivid colors need extra care

Bright shades like pink, blue, purple, copper and red are the most beautiful colors to wear and the fastest to fade. They sit closer to the surface of the hair, and they usually go on hair that has been lightened first, which makes it more porous. Red molecules are also larger and slip out of the hair more easily, which is why reds lose their intensity quicker than almost any other shade. Everything above matters twice as much for a vivid color, and a few extra habits help it last.

  • Rinse with cool water every time. Warm water is the quickest way to lose a vivid shade.
  • Stretch the time between washes as much as you comfortably can, and co wash in between.
  • Ask about a color depositing conditioner in your shade. It adds a little pigment back with every use and keeps the tone fresh between visits.
  • Expect a little color on towels and pillowcases for the first few washes. A dark towel and an old pillowcase save you the worry.
  • Be extra careful with the sea, the pool and strong sun. Vivid shades react the most to salt, chlorine and UV light.

Every vivid color fades into a softer version of itself, and that is part of its charm. With good care, that softer stage comes later and looks intentional rather than washed out. When you are ready for the intensity again, a refresh brings it right back.

Blondes: keeping it cool, not brassy

Blonde is the color that changes most on this coast. When hair is lightened, the warm yellow and orange tones underneath never fully disappear. Sun, salt and minerals in the water slowly bring them back to the surface, and a cool, clean blonde starts to look yellow or brassy.

A tinted shampoo is the easiest way to keep that warmth under control at home. It works with simple color theory: opposite colors cancel each other out.

  • Purple shampoo neutralizes yellow. It is the one most blondes need, especially light and platinum shades.
  • Blue shampoo neutralizes orange. It suits darker blondes and brown hair with highlights or balayage.
  • Use it once a week, or every third or fourth wash, in place of your regular shampoo. Leave it on for a few minutes, then follow with conditioner, because tinted shampoos can be drying.
  • Do not overdo it. Used too often, it can leave very light hair looking dull, grey or slightly lilac. If that happens, simply skip it for a few washes.

The line I recommend for blondes

For blondes, I recommend the Blonde Cold Reflections line from INsight. It is made for natural, colored or lightened blonde hair, and it works beautifully on grey and white hair too, which can also turn yellow in the sun. Two products do the work at home.

  • Cold Reflections Brightening Shampoo. Its purple pigments neutralize yellow and warm tones while it cleanses, and keep the blonde bright and on the cooler side. Leave it on for about three minutes, a little longer when the warmth is stronger, then rinse.
  • Cold Reflections Hair Mask. Use it after the shampoo, on damp, towel dried hair, focusing on the lengths and ends. Leave it on for five to ten minutes. It neutralizes yellow and orange tones and nourishes lightened hair at the same time, and the longer you leave it, the stronger the cooling effect.

The line is built on organic oat extract to hydrate the hair and soothe the scalp, organic chamomile to soften the hair and bring out the brightness of light shades, and organic chestnut extract, a natural antioxidant that hydrates and nourishes. Like the rest of INsight, it is made in Italy, vegan, nickel tested and free of sulfates and parabens. On the days you are not using the Blonde line, the Antioxidant line keeps protecting your blonde from the sun that causes the yellowing in the first place.

A tinted shampoo keeps the tone fresh between visits, but it cannot replace a professional toner. When the warmth comes back stronger than your shampoo can handle, that is the moment to book a refresh.

The line I recommend: INsight Antioxidant

For color on this coast, I recommend the Antioxidant line from INsight, a professional hair brand made in Italy. It was designed for exactly the life we live here: hair exposed every day to sun, wind, sea water, chlorine and pollution.

Why antioxidants protect color

Sun does more than dry the hair. UV light creates free radicals, unstable molecules that attack the hair fiber and break color pigment down from the inside. That is a big part of why color turns brassy or dull so fast here. Antioxidants neutralize those free radicals before they can do the damage.

The heart of the line is organic carrot extract, rich in beta carotene, a powerful natural antioxidant. It is combined with soy butter and hazelnut oil, which help restore the structure and vitality of the hair while it builds a protective barrier against the elements.

The routine

  • Antioxidant Shampoo. A gentle, sulfate free and silicone free cleanse that protects the hair from outside damage while it washes.
  • Antioxidant Hair Conditioner. Detangles and strengthens the hair from root to tip, and makes a perfect co wash between full washes.
  • Antioxidant Hair Mask. Once a week, or more often for dry or damaged hair. This is the deep hydration step that keeps porous, color treated hair from losing moisture and pigment.
  • Protective Hair Spray. A light, nourishing spray that shields the hair from sun and sea air. Use it before the beach or any long day outside.

The line is dermatologically tested, suitable for all hair types and sensitive scalps, and free of sulfates, silicones and parabens. Before blow drying or using styling tools, add a heat protector, and seal last with something light rather than a heavy oil like coconut oil, which weighs the hair down without really sealing it.

Ask me at your next appointment and I will tell you exactly which products your color needs.

When to come back

Even with perfect care, color changes over time. A refresh, a gloss or a root touch up keeps it even and saves you from needing a bigger correction later. If you are not sure what your color needs, message me and we can talk it through before you book.

Good color is a partnership. I take care of it in the chair, and a few small habits at home keep it looking the way it did the day you walked out.

  • No te pasés.
