Curly hair gets cut like it is not curly, and that is where most disappointment starts. Here is how a cut that actually respects your pattern works, what changes on this coast, and how to keep it between visits.
Why most curly cuts fall short
Most training teaches cutting hair straight and wet, then hoping the curl behaves once it dries. Curls do not work that way. A pattern that looks even wet can spring up unevenly once it dries and shrinks to its true length, shorter on one side, blunt where it should taper. That gap between what a stylist sees at the chair and what a client sees the next morning is where most curly haircut disappointment comes from.
What the Signature Cut actually does
Signature Cut is the name for every precision haircut at OCTO, whatever your hair type or texture. It is not a curly specific service on its own, it is simply how every cut here is done: shaped to the person in the chair rather than to a generic template.
For curly hair specifically, that means choosing the right approach for what you actually want, not applying one default method to every curl pattern that sits in the chair. Which technique that is depends entirely on the goal, and that is exactly where the two methods below come in.
Two techniques for two different curl goals
Not every curly cut has the same goal, and using one technique for everything is how density gets lost that a client never wanted taken out in the first place.
- Presley Poe method, for keeping density. It builds the cut in zones, reading the hair like fabric rather than forcing one template on it. Used when the goal is to keep the fullness and shape of the curl exactly where it is, in a shape that holds up and repeats the way it is meant to.
- Jayne Matthews razor method, for removing weight. A carving motion with the edge of the blade, worked from the interior of the shape outward with tension held throughout, not the flat scraping most people picture. Used when a client wants real weight taken out, usually for a looser, shaggier finish on thick or dense curls.
Which one is right for you depends entirely on what you are trying to keep and what you are trying to lose, and that is exactly what we talk through in a consultation before any cutting starts.
Curl pattern and porosity are two different things
Two clients with the same curl pattern can need completely different products, because pattern and porosity are not the same measurement. Pattern is the shape the curl takes. Porosity is how easily your hair absorbs and holds moisture.
- High porosity hair, often hair that has been coloured or is more textured, drinks up product fast and can dry out just as fast.
- Low porosity hair resists product and can end up weighed down by the same routine that works beautifully on someone else.
Part of a curl consultation is figuring out which one you actually have, rather than assuming from the pattern alone.
What actually works on this coast
Most frizz advice assumes the humidity eases up for part of the year. On this coast, it does not. The dew point here sits high almost every day, and that changes which products actually help.
Dehydrated hair is usually the hair that frizzes fastest here, not the best hydrated hair. Hair that does not have enough moisture of its own pulls water from the air in an uncontrolled way the moment humidity rises, and that pull is what turns into frizz. So the fix on this coast is not skipping hydration, it is layering it in the right order and then locking it in.
- Hydrate first, always. A hydrating mask, leave-in conditioner and definition cream give the hair the moisture it needs before anything else. Fine hair still needs this step, just in a lighter version.
- Style with what actually holds up here. On most curls in this climate I get the best results with gel, more consistently than mousse or cream on its own.
- Protect before heat. A heat protector goes on before any blow drying or diffusing, and it matters just as much against the sun during the day.
- Seal last, not instead. The sealant needs to be light, an oil or serum, not something heavy. Coconut oil, for example, is usually too heavy to make a real difference as a seal. It can work on very thick or heavy hair to add weight, but not as a sealant on its own. And a sealant with nothing hydrating underneath does not do much either.
Skipping that first step is usually why a routine that should work seems to stop working the moment the air gets heavier.
Looking after it between appointments
Curly hair is rarely improved by washing it every day. A few habits matter more than any single product, especially with the beach life this coast comes with.
- Co-wash between full washes. Cleansing with conditioner instead of shampoo is gentle and adds moisture at the same time, and it gives better results than reaching for a full shampoo every time, especially with how often salt water and sand call for a rinse.
- Use a gentle, sulfate free shampoo for the washes that do need a real shampoo. A strong shampoo strips out more moisture than curly hair can afford to lose, and the routine ends up trying to fix that with heavier and heavier conditioners instead of just not stripping it out in the first place.
- Detangle in the shower with conditioner still in the hair, never dry.
- Let curls dry undisturbed rather than touching them constantly while they set.
Small habits like these are the difference between a cut that grows out well and one that turns into a shapeless mess after three weeks.
What to bring to a curl consultation
The more accurate the starting picture, the better the cut. A few things help before you sit down.
- Come in with your hair in its natural state if you can, curly, not blown out or straightened.
- Bring photos of cuts you like.
- Be honest about your hair's history: colour, keratin treatments, chemical straightening. All of it changes how the hair behaves and what it can hold.
If your curls have never quite looked the way you pictured them, that is usually a cutting problem, not a hair problem. Let's find out what your actual pattern wants.
