Salons throw around words like clean, natural, organic and gentle with almost no agreement about what any of them mean. Rather than add to that noise, here is exactly what we use on your hair, what the certifications actually cover, and where the honest limits are.
What vegan-certified actually means
Every haircare product in the salon is VeganOK certified. That means no animal-derived ingredients anywhere in the formula, and it covers everything: the shampoos, the conditioners, the masks and treatments, and the colour line too. Our products are made in Italy by Insight Professional.
It is worth being precise about what this does and does not tell you. Vegan means no animal ingredients and no animal testing. It does not by itself mean organic, and it does not mean a formula contains nothing synthetic. What makes it worth quoting is that it is an independently audited certification rather than a word a marketing department chose. That is exactly why we lean on it instead of something vaguer.
Why we do not call ourselves an organic salon
There is no legal definition of organic hair colour, which is precisely why the word gets used so freely. Any product that permanently lifts and deposits colour needs chemistry to do it. That is unavoidable, and no permanent colour on earth is one hundred percent natural. Any salon telling you otherwise is selling you something.
Here is what is actually true of the line we use. The formulas average more than 96% naturally derived ingredients. The manufacturer prefers certified organic farming ingredients where they can be traced. Three of its ranges, Sensitive, Lenitive and Native, carry COSMOS Natural certification, the European standard for natural and organic cosmetics. Those are specific claims we can stand behind. Organic across the board is not one of them, so we do not say it.
Low ammonia, not ammonia-free
Our colour is low-ammonia. It is not ammonia-free, and we would rather tell you that plainly than let you assume otherwise.
Ammonia does a real job. It swells the hair cuticle so colour can get inside. It is also responsible for that sharp smell, and for a good part of why some people leave a salon with a tight, tender, itchy scalp. A low-ammonia formula uses considerably less of it, and most clients notice that as a gentler experience during processing and a softer finish afterwards.
The trade-off is worth knowing. Lower ammonia can lift slightly less on very dark natural hair, and some processes take a little longer. For the vast majority of what we do, from grey coverage and tonal changes to gloss, root touch-ups and warm or ashy tones, you will not see a difference in the result. You will feel one on your scalp.
What is deliberately left out
The absences matter as much as the ingredients:
- SLS and SLES, the harsh sulphates, replaced with plant-based surfactants that clean just as well
- Mineral oils and petrolates, which form a film on the scalp and carry a heavy environmental cost
- Silicones, progressively removed. They give instant shine, but they build up on the hair and persist in the environment
- Parabens and MIT preservatives, replaced with milder ones accepted by organic certification bodies
- Synthetic colorants, unless the colour is functional to the product
Every formula is nickel-tested and dermatologically tested, and the water used in them is purified with ozone rather than chemicals.
The part nobody mentions: your hair here is already under strain
This is the argument that matters most on this coast, and it is why the choice felt practical rather than idealistic.
Hair in Puerto Viejo is not living an easy life. It gets salt water, strong equatorial sun, chlorine, high humidity and often daily rinsing. By the time you sit in our chair, your cuticle has already taken a beating. Layering the harshest available colour process on top of that is how you end up with brittle mid-lengths and colour that slides out in three weeks.
Choosing gentler chemistry is not about purity. It is about leaving your hair with enough integrity to hold the colour you just paid for.
What goes down the drain here goes somewhere
Playa Chiquita sits in one of the most biodiverse corridors in Costa Rica, a few hundred metres from the sea and inside a watershed that drains toward the reef. Everything rinsed out of a client's hair leaves this building and enters that system. On this coast that is not an abstraction. It is the beach at the end of the road.
For what it is worth on the manufacturing side, Insight is a certified carbon-neutral company running on renewable energy, and sources palm oil through the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil. It is a small salon making a small contribution and we are clear-eyed about the scale of it, but it was not a hard decision.
A word about sensitivity, honestly
Gentler does not mean allergy-proof. If you have ever had a reaction to hair colour, whether itching, swelling or a rash along the hairline, tell us before your appointment rather than during. It genuinely changes what we reach for, and we would always rather know in advance than work it out halfway through.
So does the colour actually perform?
Yes. The colour line gives full grey coverage, and it won Best Permanent Hair Colour at the 2023 Hair Awards, with finalist places in 2024 and 2025. Awards are not everything, but they are a useful counterweight to the assumption that gentler chemistry has to mean weaker results.
The measure that matters more to us is quieter than that. Clients stopped asking about coverage and longevity. What we hear instead is less scalp irritation, less of the tight feeling afterwards, and hair that holds its condition between appointments.

Los salones usan palabras como limpio, natural, orgánico y suave sin que nadie se ponga de acuerdo en qué significan. En lugar de sumar ruido, aquí está exactamente lo que usamos en tu cabello, qué cubren realmente las certificaciones y dónde están los límites honestos.
Qué significa realmente certificado vegano
Todos los productos de cuidado capilar del salón tienen certificación VeganOK. Eso significa que no hay ingredientes de origen animal en ninguna fórmula, y cubre todo: champús, acondicionadores, mascarillas, tratamientos y también la línea de color. Nuestros productos están hechos en Italia por Insight Professional.
Vale la pena ser precisas sobre lo que esto dice y lo que no. Vegano significa sin ingredientes de origen animal y sin testeo en animales. No significa por sí solo orgánico, ni que una fórmula no contenga nada sintético. Lo que lo hace digno de mención es que es una certificación auditada de forma independiente y no una palabra elegida por un departamento de marketing. Por eso nos apoyamos en ella y no en algo más vago.
Por qué no nos llamamos salón orgánico
No existe una definición legal de tinte orgánico, y justamente por eso la palabra se usa con tanta ligereza. Cualquier producto que aclare y deposite color de forma permanente necesita química para lograrlo. Eso es inevitable, y ningún color permanente del mundo es cien por ciento natural. Cualquier salón que diga lo contrario te está vendiendo algo.
Esto sí es cierto de la línea que usamos. Las fórmulas contienen en promedio más del 96% de ingredientes de origen natural. El fabricante prefiere ingredientes de agricultura ecológica certificada cuando puede trazarlos. Tres de sus gamas, Sensitive, Lenitive y Native, tienen certificación COSMOS Natural, el estándar europeo de cosmética natural y ecológica. Esas son afirmaciones concretas que podemos sostener. Orgánico en todo no lo es, así que no lo decimos.
Bajo en amoníaco, no libre de amoníaco
Nuestro color es bajo en amoníaco. No está libre de amoníaco, y preferimos decírtelo claramente antes que dejar que supongas otra cosa.
El amoníaco cumple una función real: abre la cutícula para que el color pueda entrar. También es responsable de ese olor punzante y de buena parte de por qué algunas personas salen de un salón con el cuero cabelludo tirante, sensible y con picazón. Una fórmula baja en amoníaco usa bastante menos, y la mayoría de las clientas lo nota como una experiencia más suave durante el proceso y un acabado más sedoso después.
La contrapartida conviene conocerla. Menos amoníaco puede aclarar un poco menos sobre cabello natural muy oscuro, y algunos procesos tardan algo más. Para la gran mayoría de lo que hacemos, desde cobertura de canas y cambios tonales hasta brillos, retoque de raíz y tonos cálidos o cenizos, no vas a ver diferencia en el resultado. La vas a sentir en el cuero cabelludo.
Lo que se deja fuera a propósito
Las ausencias importan tanto como los ingredientes:
- SLS y SLES, los sulfatos agresivos, sustituidos por tensioactivos de origen vegetal que limpian igual de bien
- Aceites minerales y derivados del petróleo, que forman una película sobre el cuero cabelludo y tienen un alto costo ambiental
- Siliconas, eliminadas progresivamente. Dan brillo inmediato, pero se acumulan en el cabello y persisten en el ambiente
- Parabenos y conservantes MIT, sustituidos por otros más suaves aceptados por los organismos de certificación ecológica
- Colorantes sintéticos, salvo cuando el color cumple una función en el producto
Todas las fórmulas son níquel-testadas y dermatológicamente testadas, y el agua que se usa en ellas se purifica con ozono en lugar de químicos.
Lo que nadie menciona: aquí tu cabello ya viene castigado
Este es el argumento que más pesa en esta costa, y por eso la decisión fue práctica y no idealista.
El cabello en Puerto Viejo no lleva una vida fácil. Recibe agua salada, sol ecuatorial fuerte, cloro, humedad alta y, a menudo, enjuagues diarios. Para cuando te sientas en nuestra silla, tu cutícula ya ha recibido bastante. Sumarle encima el proceso de color más agresivo disponible es la receta para medios quebradizos y un color que se va en tres semanas.
Elegir una química más amable no es una cuestión de pureza. Es dejarle a tu cabello la integridad suficiente para sostener el color que acabas de pagar.
Lo que se va por el desagüe va a alguna parte
Playa Chiquita está en uno de los corredores con mayor biodiversidad de Costa Rica, a unos cientos de metros del mar y dentro de una cuenca que drena hacia el arrecife. Todo lo que se enjuaga del cabello de una clienta sale de este edificio y entra en ese sistema. En esta costa eso no es una abstracción. Es la playa al final del camino.
Por el lado de la fabricación, Insight es una empresa certificada como carbono neutral, funciona con energía renovable y obtiene su aceite de palma a través de la Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil. Es la pequeña contribución de un salón pequeño y tenemos clara su escala, pero no fue una decisión difícil.
Una palabra honesta sobre la sensibilidad
Más suave no significa libre de alergias. Si alguna vez has tenido una reacción al tinte, ya sea picazón, hinchazón o sarpullido en la línea del cabello, dínoslo antes de tu cita y no durante. Cambia de verdad lo que elegimos usar, y siempre preferimos saberlo con antelación que descubrirlo a mitad del proceso.
Entonces, ¿el color realmente funciona?
Sí. La línea de color da cobertura total de canas y ganó el premio a Mejor Color Permanente en los Hair Awards de 2023, además de ser finalista en 2024 y 2025. Los premios no lo son todo, pero sirven de contrapeso a la idea de que una química más suave tiene que dar resultados más débiles.
La medida que más nos importa es más silenciosa que esa. Las clientas dejaron de preguntar por la cobertura y la duración. Lo que escuchamos ahora es menos irritación del cuero cabelludo, menos sensación de tirantez después, y un cabello que se mantiene mejor entre citas.
